NY DJ run over by a cab while sleeping in hotel room

New York D.J. Jonathan Toubin was in critical condition (now stable) after a taxi ran into his motel room yesterday morning and ran him over. A black-and-white Radio Cab had plowed through bamboo bushes and into the ground floor room that was occupied by Toubin who was in Portland, Oregon to DJ a show Thursday night at a Southeast Portland club. He was found stuck under the front of the car. The car couldn’t be backed out of the room because its back wheels were stuck on the remains of the wall. It took 4 men to lift the cab off Toubin who was semi-conscious and had been pinned under the front of the cab and against the room’s back wall. He was able to talk but completely covered in blood as he was carried into an ambulance. Apparently, the taxi driver, 52 year old Terry L. Uding, had come to the Jupiter Hotel to pick up a fare but was waved off when she arrived, so then she accelerated into the hotel room. She had low blood sugar at the scene and likely suffered a diabetic medical emergency. When police arrived on the scene, she was lying in the parking lot with a heavy comforter over her. She was taken to a local hospital and has been treated and released. Police are still investigating the crash.

Toubin is now in stable condition (as of 1am Friday morning) and is undergoing a 2nd surgery today.

Violence at Queens nightclub Amnesia

Just after 4am Sunday morning, as the nightclub Amnesia in Queens (Steinway St./36th Ave.) was closing, and people were exiting, a 23 year old man was jumped by a group and slashed in the back. He was taken to a hospital and received 62 staples to close the wound. A driver passing by (not believed to be connected to the fight) hit several people, slammed into a parked car, stopped for a second and then escaped. Orlando Santos, an 18 year old man from Brooklyn, suffered a dislocated hip after being run over by the driver. He was arrested at the hospital in connection to the slashing attack and charged with gang assault. A 28 year old man was taken to the hospital after being slashed in the left side of his face during the brawl and struck by the vehicle. A 25 year old man was also taken to the hospital for cuts from the hit and run. Steven Martinez, 20, was also arrested and charged with gang assault after police chased him down on foot near the club.

Tragedy at Harvard/Yale Tailgate

Yesterday, just before 10am, a U-Haul drove into people at the Harvard-Yale tailgate, killing one person. Brendan J. Ross, a Yale junior from St. Louis and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, was driving the U-Haul truck. He passed a field sobriety test after the accident, and the U-Haul was impounded for forensic testing. Ross’s lawyer said that the crash “appears to be the result of a vehicle malfunction.” Witnesses say that the truck was going about 35 mph when it crashed, and it appeared that the driver was not able to stop the truck. It only stopped because it crashed into 2 other U-Haul trucks. The deceased woman was 30 year old Nancy Barry of Salem, Massachusetts. Two other women were seriously injured: Sarah Short, 31, Yale School of Management student, and Elizabeth Dernbach, 23, computer lab assistant at Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education. Short remained hospitalized today. In the picture I took, you can see that the U-Haul drove into our GPSS (senate) U-Haul. I feel very lucky that I overslept, because my plan was to be there at 9:30am. What does this mean for the future of tailgating at The Game in New Haven?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased and the others affected by this tragedy.

Another coach molestation scandal (Syracuse)

Syracuse University associate head basketball coach, Bernie Fine, is accused of molesting Bobby Davis (now 39 years old) for more than a dozen years beginning in the mid-1980s. The victim claims that the abuse occurred at Fine’s home, SU basketball facilities, and on road trips. Moreover, a relative Davis also claims that he was molested by Fine around the same time. Fine is now in his 35th season as an assistant to head coach Jim Boeheim. Apparently a molestation claim was brought to police attention in 2005 by an adult male, but Syracuse City Police had declined to investigate the claim since the statute of limitations had expired. The University had launched an investigation but could not find anyone who could confirm that the molestation had occurred. Davis reported what had happened to him to police in 2003 but police could not proceed with the investigation for the same reasons as in 2005. We will probably get more information on this case in the next few days, so I’ll keep you updated as I read more about it.
