CFDA agrees to move NYFW dates

This past September, there was a lot of talk about changing the dates of NYFW. Normally, it starts on the first Thursday of September and goes for one week. This past September, Milan moved up its schedule, so it overlapped with London Fashion Week. This made it so that editors, buyers, and models had to choose between London and Milan. London could not adjust its fashion week because it’s sandwiched between NYFW and MFW. The Italian Chamber of Fashion wants to begin MFW during dates that coincide with NYFW and continue through LFW. Vogue editors and Condé Nast International like the schedule as it is and don’t want to change it.

Next year, NYFW will be Sept. 6-13. Thus, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), headed by Diane Von Furstenberg, accepted Milan’s request for moving NYFW to begin on the second Thursday of September in 2013 and 2014. However, it rejected Milan’s request to shorten NYFW by eliminating the last day, which always includes some of my favorite shows: Ralph Lauren, L’Wren Scott, Calvin Klein, Naeem Khan, Bill Blass, Elene Cassis (new as of last year), and Marc Jacobs.

There has been some talk about removing the men’s shows from NYFW and presenting them before NYFW (they used to do this, and Milan and Paris have their own Men’s Fashion Week).

This past season, the dates were as follows:

New York: Sept. 8-15

London: Sept. 15-22

Milan: Sept. 21-27

Paris: Sept. 29-Oct. 6

In the future (2013), the dates will be:

New York: Sept. 13-19

London: Sept. 20-24

Milan: Sept. 25-Oct. 1

Paris: Oct. 1-9
