Man Buns

The New York Times had an article today about man buns: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/26/fashion/in-brooklyn-committing-to-a-man-bun.html They give advice for men who want to try this hairstyle: Alexander Kellum, 31, a fine-arts painter and yoga teacher who lives in Williamsburg, bends forward and pulls his long chestnut hair in front of him; then he performs a twisting and wrapping motion until his hair is firmly tucked into a knot at the back of his head. Sometimes he’ll let a little hair poke out for an “abstract expressionist” flourish, he said. A rubber band, a hair band or even a piece of string holds his bun in place.

Olivier Theyskens, Orlando Bloom, Heath Ledger, Gavin Rossdale, Russell Brand, and others have been wearing their long hair up in buns for the past few years. Lately more guys have been sporting this trend. If a guy has long hair and wants to get it out of his face, a bun looks better than any kind of ponytail.

It’s also becoming popular among athletes, such as tennis players Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse.

Ladies, do you like this look on guys? And guys, would you try this look?

Favorite Makeup

I wanted to share my favorite makeup, so I took everything out of my makeup bag that I travel with and made a list of the items. Click the images to purchase the items from Amazon (most of them are discounted).

Benefit Feelin’ Cheeky Minis ($25 for the travel size trio set or $29 each for one full size bottle)

High beam is my favorite (by far the best highlighter I’ve ever tried); I use it as a highlighter on the top of my cheeks, under my eyebrows, a dot on my cupid’s bow, the corners of my inner eyes, and sometimes on my temples just above my eyebrows. Benetint is a great natural looking cheek tint that can be used for daytime if you use just 1-2 drops, or you can put a little bit more on for evenings. It is a liquid tint rather than a gel tint like the other 2. You can also use it on your lips for a stained lip look. Posie tint is a lighter color that I like to use on my cheeks sometimes during the day, but I use the other 2 more.

Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eyeliners

I really like how smoothly these eyeliners glide on; they come in all colors including the basic darks as well as more colorful, sparkly colors. You can buy them in mini or full size.

Too Faced eyeshadow kit in Smoky Eye

I especially like the black and the highlighter just above it for under my eyebrows and the corners of my inner eyes. The highlighter should be used at night; it’s not as subtle as the Benefit high beam highlighter.

L’Oreal carbon black extra-intense liquid pencil eyeliner

This is another eyeliner that glides on very smoothly. There is a pencil on one end and a small sponge used to smudge the line on the other.

Milani Liquif’Eye brown metallic eye liner pencil

This is another type of eyeliner that I like to use because it goes on so easily (no tugging) and is very dark. It’s an inexpensive drugstore option, just like the L’Oreal one above.

MaxFactor False Lash Effect Mascara

This mascara is not sold in the US anymore, so I got one recently when I was in Poland. You can also order them online. I’ve always liked MaxFactor mascara the most, because it could lengthen and add a lot of volume to my lashes without clumping.

L’Oreal voluminous million lashes mascara

I like this mascara more for a daily basis, because it lengthens and defines without clumping. It doesn’t give as much volume as the MaxFactor one though.

Joey New York pure pores pressed powder (used with loose powder brush)

This is a pressed powder that creates a matte finish. It contains a blend of extracts that have astringent-like properties to naturally help minimize the appearance of large pores, inhibit oil shine, and keep makeup looking fresh. I like to use loose powder on my face after I apply makeup so that my skin doesn’t get oily, but loose powder can get messy and is not as easy to carry around, so I just use this powder compact with a loose powder brush for the same effect. The powder is silica based and provides even coverage without looking cakey or pasty. I can’t find it in stores anymore, but it’s still sold online.

Nars blush and bronzer sticks (Orgasm and South Beach)

The orgasm blush stick is one of my favorite blush colors, and I think the stick is a lot more convenient to use than the powder. It’s a great rosy color that also has some shimmer. The south beach bronzer stick is my favorite bronzer (shimmery, tan color), and I use it on my cheeks as well as the bridge of my nose to look like I just spent the day out in the sun. These sticks from Nars come in very many different shades though.

Chanel eyeshadow palette (taupe craze)

I spent a long time looking for the perfect taupe eyeshadow, and Lancome is definitely it. I usually use the bottom brown color close to my eyelashes, then the taupe shade on the left all over my eyelid followed my the lighter, shimmery taupe shade on the right in the center of my eyelids by the lash line.

I couldn’t find a link to buy this one, so the closest I could find is this:

YSL touche eiclat

This is one of my favorite concealers; it provides coverage while still being light and having a great texture (not watery and not too thick so that it is hard to blend). I especially like to use this under my eyes.

Vichy Dermablend corrective foundation

I prefer to use the YSL concealer under my eyes, but if I have any zits, I like to use this Vichy foundation as a concealer. It covers any imperfections, and I don’t know if it actually does, but in my experience, it seems to help heal zits as well (unlike other concealers that just make things worse). Maybe it’s the Vichy thermal water that’s used in making it. Just make sure you don’t overdo it—a tiny bit of this foundation goes a long way.

YSL lipstick Rouge Pur Couture in Le Rouge and L’Orange

I recently found the perfect red lipstick after trying many of the best known ones. YSL Le Rouge is exactly the color I was looking for and has a great consistency that doesn’t dry out my lips. For a more fun color, I also like L’Orange, which is a bright orange-red color. This lipstick comes in many other great shades too.

Michael Kors Leg Shine-Classic ($10 travel size)

This also comes in a larger size, but the small one lasts a long time. Even though I don’t use this on my face, I had to include it since it’s a bronzer. I use it on my legs as well as my collar bone and shoulders for a great natural looking bronze tint with a little shimmer. Don’t expect to get much color from this, but I personally only like a subtle hint of color from a bronzer. I also love the scent, so it can be used as an alternative to perfume.

Anastasia clear brow gel and eyebrow pencil and powder

I go to Anastasia to get my eyebrows waxed and love her brow kit. Out of the things included, I mostly like to use the powder and gel. The highlighter is also nice, but I prefer to use Benefit’s high beam as a highlighter. The eyelid shine gel gives your eyelids a nice, dewy look. I always thought that eyebrow pencils, as well as any sort of eyebrow makeup, made people look ridiculous, but this kit lets you keep a natural eyebrow look. The powder can be very subtle depending on how much you put on, and it makes a big difference in outlining your face (even with just a little put on). The gel lets you keep your brows in place and helps define the shape.

1oak nyc closed until Jan. 17

I received an email yesterday from 1oak saying that they will be closed for the next 2 weeks. They will reopen on Jan. 17 with a “new look,” including new lights and sound system. I wonder how much they will change the appearance of the club—personally, I wouldn’t change anything, but I’ll post photos if they change a lot when they reopen. I don’t appreciate that they are going to be closed for my birthday (they obviously should have checked with me before making this decision!), but until then, they recommend visiting Darby Downstairs, which is smaller but you can expect a similar crowd and the same DJs.

New Year’s Eve Dresses

New Year’s Eve is less than a week away, so it’s time to find a dress if you’re planning to go out. For New Year’s Eve, I like dresses that stand out; this usually means lots of sequins or bright colors. Just make sure that it’s comfortable enough to dance in for the whole night. The following dresses are some of my favorites for this occasion.

I love this Balmain dress:

I have a gold sequin and black mesh dress from ASOS that I might wear this year. www.asos.com has hundreds of affordable options for NYE dresses. The one below on the left was less than $50. It reminds me of the Matthew Williamson dress below on the right ($2,345).

This dress is TFNC, also sold at ASOS and comes in different colors:

Topshop has many fun options for NYE as well, such as this red dress:

The Miu Miu cashmere and silk sweater (and heels) and Christopher Kane skirt below would be a nice option for a more formal evening. The overall look is elegant and rather conservative, but the skirt keeps it modern and fun.

AllSaints makes many beaded dresses that I like. My favorite one (Aztec mini dress) has a colorful, tribal inspired print:

They have similar dresses and skirts in different colors and styles:

The Victoria’s Secret models usually look great when they go out, and any of these dresses would be perfect for NYE.

I also really like red Herve Leger dresses, like this one on Lauren Conrad:

Are runway models too skinny?

There has been a lot of talk lately about how skinny models are becoming, especially after H&M revealed that their online models are created from computerized images with real models’ heads.

Moreover, Karlie Kloss’ photos in Italian Vogue stirred some controversy last week.

Franca Sozzani, Vogue Italia editor, defended the photos. She claims that they are not photoshopped, and Kloss (19 years old) is not anorexic and has a muscular body. She posted the message here: http://www.vogue.it/en/magazine/editor-s-blog/2011/12/december-12nd

Skinny figures did not become popular until the 1960’s. That is when Twiggy, as well as Jean Shrimpton, (pictured above) popularized the slim, boyish figure. Twiggy was 5’6” and 91 lbs when she was modeling.

In the 80’s, Cindy Crawford, Brooke Shields, and Christie Brinkley (pictured above) had a more toned and fit look and were the popular models of that decade. Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington continued the fit, curvy trend into the beginning of the 90’s. However, not long after that, the heroin chic look became the new trend in models. Kate Moss made this waif look popular with her 5’7” and 100 lb figure, and it seems that the fashion industry has been pushing for skinnier and skinnier models ever since. These days it’s expected for models to have a 23” waist, and since they are often 5’10” and about 110 lbs, this means a BMI of about 16. In the 60’s, models weighed 8% less than the average woman; now they weigh 23% less. Both eating disorders and obesity are on the rise.

A standard designer sample is a size 0 to 4, so in the modeling industry, any model over a size 6 is generally considered plus size. However, plus size clothing in stores starts at size 14 or 16. Most designer collections run up to a size 10 or 12, even though the average American woman’s dress size is 14.

Why have so many of us changed our views of what we find beautiful?

Even though the shows at NYFW are beautiful, it’s often disturbing to see some of the models changing and getting ready backstage because they are so thin.

The 3 photos below are of Ukrainian model Nataliya Gotsiy. She claims (as reported by NYMag) that she was singled out by CNN (there was a special about models and eating disorders) and “nobody cares, they just take a name and put a lot of shit. We’re going out, we’re having dinners, everybody’s eating, there’s no anorexia in this business!”

Models often talk about how much they eat, and it’s probably because they’re afraid of losing work. Most of these girls eat very little. Backstage at NYFW, the most I see them eating are the little non-fat plain frozen kefirs that are given out for free (and very few models are seen eating these). Many of them smoke a lot too. When model Marvy Rieder was asked if models are open about restricting food, she told NYMag: “They hide it by saying, ‘I just ate so much at home, I’m not hungry anymore.’ I’ve heard it a million times.”

At 5’10”, model Sabrina Hunter was expected to be “115 or lower, preferably.” After she signed with an American agency, she was given a choice: lose weight or gain and be a plus size model. After trying to gain unsuccessfully, she went the opposite direction, eating 600 calories and jogging five miles a day. “It made me extremely moody and depressed. And I looked it, in the face. But that’s how all the models look,” she says.

There are many models with eating disorders. Luisel Ramos from Uruguay had been told by a modeling agency that she could make it big if she lost a “significant” amount of weight. She died of heart failure caused by anorexia on the catwalk during a fashion show in 2006. After her death, Madrid Fashion Week set a minimum BMI of 18 for all models. Milan followed and set a minimum BMI of 18.5 for all models. Luisel’s sister, model Eliana Ramos, died in 2007 after restricting herself to a similar diet of lettuce leaves and Diet Coke. Also in 2006, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died weighing 88 lbs and 5’8” (pictured below).

In 2001, model Leila Pahlavi died of a prescription drug and cocaine overdose at the age of 31 after her body had become emaciated by years of anorexia and bulimia. In 2010, French model Isabelle Caro died at age 28. She admitted that she was anorexic and appeared in a controversial advertising campaign “No Anorexia.”  She weighed just 55 lbs at a height of 5’5”.

Although some girls are naturally very skinny and healthy, many girls are not, especially as they get older, and they are pressured into being unhealthy just so that they can be as thin as possible. Sara Ziff’s documentary “Picture Me” looks at the inner world of modeling. Vogue cover model Amy Lemons was told by her agent to eat one rice cake a day in order to keep her weight down (and she was 17 years old at the time). If that didn’t work, she was supposed to eat only half a rice cake. She had also seen girls dipping cotton balls in juice and eating them to feel somewhat full and keep their weight down.

Some designers dispute that they are solely to blame for models’ weight issues. “I think we’re all to blame,” said Michael Vollbracht, the designer of Bill Blass. “I’m very aware of these girls who look too thin or unhealthy, and at one point during the casting I had to walk out of the room. We called a model’s agency and said, ‘Do you even watch these girls?’ ”

Even though the Victoria’s Secret models are not as skinny as runway models, they’re still quite thin and there’s a lot of pressure for them to stay slim, so they go on liquid diets and crazy workout routines in the weeks before their annual fashion show. They are often photo shopped to look even skinnier than they are.

Natasha Poly (5’10”) is pictured below walking in fashion shows.

Designers say that their clothes “hang” best on skinny models. Many young girls look up to these models and feel as though this is how they should look and that this is what others find attractive.

Gemma Ward was discovered when she was 14 and extremely thin. However, in 2007, she walked the Chanel show in a denim bikini after gaining 10-15 lbs and weighing about 120 lbs (and 5’10”). One anonymous editor said that she didn’t even recognize Gemma. The editor confessed that she was aghast and said that Gemma looked “big, almost bloated.” She continued to gain weight and has moved away from the fashion world.

Natalia Vodianova (below) was 5’9” and 106 lbs at age 19. Her hair was thinning, and she was anxious and depressed. She sought help and became healthier. When she got up to 112 lbs, her agent confronted her, because designers were complaining that she wasn’t as thin as she used to be. “I defended myself, saying it was crazy to consider measurements like 33-27-34 to be normal. I think because I was one of the girls most in demand it helped me to be able to forget the incident quickly. On the other hand, it makes me think that if I had been weak at the time, I can really imagine how it could have helped me endanger myself.” The models she had met on her way to the top were more malleable, she told the audience at a CFDA panel on eating disorders. “They were very young, a lot of them were very lonely, far from home and their loved ones. Most came from poor backgrounds and were helping their families. They left their childhood behind with dreams of a better life, and for most of them, there was nothing they wouldn’t do to live those dreams.”

Ann Ward was the winner of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 15. She is 6’2” and received a lot of attention because of her tiny waist.

This year’s Elite Model Look contest winner is 15 year old Julia Schneider from Sweden and is also very thin.

Now it seems as though young female models are not even skinny enough that they have started using male models for lingerie ads. What kind of message is this sending to young girls who might have some curves on their bodies? Andrej Pejic is the newest model for Hema lingerie.

At a CFDA talk, Coco Rocha said: “I felt pressure early in my career … I was told, ‘The look this year is anorexic. We don’t want you to be anorexic, just look it.’ This message was especially troubling given the fact that I was only fifteen.”

Fashion historian Valerie Steele wonders if this isn’t the flip side of the obesity crisis: “As everyone is blimping up, we’re idealizing thinness. It can’t be separated.”

There is a lot of pressure to be skinny in Hollywood and in the music industry too, but the fashion industry is promoting these extremely skinny women and telling the world that if you want to wear these beautiful clothes, you need to be skinny.

Dining in the Dark

Dans le noir has posted sample menus (http://newyork.danslenoir.com/old-menus.en.html)

The NYC restaurant, located at 246 W. 38th St., will open on December 29. They will have a gospel live music pre-theater brunch on weekends with prices ranging from $43 to $69 (depending on how many glasses of surprise wine you drink). There are 3 dinner seatings: pre-theater, 7-8pm, and 9:30-10:30pm, depending on the day of the week (first seating is $49 without drinks and the other seatings are $57). The first glass of wine is $7, the second is $8, and the third is $6 (brunch makes more sense with $8, $7, then $6). Maybe it’s a typo on the website though. The experience in the dark room lasts about 1 1/2 hours, and there is also a bar attached to the restaurant. There are 4 surprise menus to choose from: white (no restrictions), blue (only fish, no meat, gluten free), red (only meat), and green (vegetarian). Notice the items on the sample menus, such as crocodile on the fish menu.

They have special pricing for New Year’s Eve. Students receive $5 off anytime with a valid ID. The above pricing is only for this month; prices will increase in January. There are Dans le noir restaurants in Paris, London, Barcelona, St. Petersburg, and Kiev.

Lip Tattoos

You’ve seen the stick on nail art, but now temporary lip tattoos are the new trend. Violent lips (http://www.violentlips.com) are selling lip tattoos that have become popular. They are temporary tattoos that last up to 8 hours and are FDA approved as vegan and are vitamin enhanced. The tattoos range from $9.99 to $14.95, and each package contains 3 applications.

Kim Kardashian and Hope Dworaczyk have been seen wearing them:

The whole Kardashian family, including Khloe, Kylie, and Kendall, seem to love this trend.

I’m not surprised that Lady Gaga has been seen in these, as well as Jessie J and Snookie.

These temporary lip tattoos are being sold at Sephora and online. On the Violent Lips website, you can upload your photo and see how different styles would look on your lips (http://www.violentlips.com/pages/makeover). Will Anna Wintour be the next celebrity wearing this trend? And more importantly, would you try these? I think I’ll stick to lipstick.

Glasses-not so nerdy anymore

Over the weekend, I got this pair of Barton Perreira glasses.

I’ve always been a fan of Oliver Peoples. Soon after OP was acquired by Oakley, Bill Barton resigned as President and Patty Perreira resigned as VP of design. This is when the Barton Perreira line of glasses was born. The frames are hand made in Japan, they’re top quality, and the designs are great.

Ryan Gosling is channeling James Dean in his Barton Perreira glasses:

This style of glasses (the plastic, nerdy looking ones) looks good on many people. It’s just a matter of finding which shape looks best on you.

Glasses have been featured in runway shows.

Celebrities love them too. It’s a great way to change your look without doing something permanent, like dying your hair or getting bangs.

Are models too young these days?

Balenciaga selected 15-year-old Juliane Gruner, 17-year-old Laura Kampman, 15-year-old Kirstin Liljegren, and 15-year-old Rosie Tapner (left to right) for their Spring 2012 ad campaign that will be shot by Steven Meisel.

Coco Rocha, who was discovered when she was 14, told Anderson Cooper: “You’re taking them out of high school and putting them in an industry that is treating them like adults—and they don’t know how to deal with that. They’re thinking about, ‘how can I please you? It doesn’t matter what I have to do, how can I please you?’ If we were probably older, wiser, there wouldn’t be as many problems—there would still be problems, but not as many.”

Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo, now 22 years old, was discovered at age 15. She told Fashionista: “You’re sixteen and thrown into this world of adults, and you have to be an adult. You have to deal with everything, you have to deal with your money and with rejection. You grow up really quick. It’s very stressful, it’s a lot of traveling, a lot of time away from family, a lot of dealing with stuff you shouldn’t be dealing with at that age. I think you should be able to get discovered when you’re young but maybe not get thrown into it so full on. Maybe start off that everyone has to finish school and that you don’t move away from home right away and there are more restrictions on hours.”

In 1949, 14-year-old Brigitte Bardot made the cover of Elle.

In 1980, 15-year-old Brooke Shields caused controversy with her Calvin Klein ads. In the commercials, her line was: “You know what comes between me and my Calvin’s? Nothing.”

When Angelina Jolie was 16, she did some modeling, and the photos feature her in provocative poses.

The 17-year-old actress, Dakota Fanning, and her 13-year-old sister, Elle Fanning, have broken into the fashion industry. They’ve had photoshoots in Vogue and W, and Dakota had a campaign with Marc Jacobs.

Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit actress), 14 years old, was featured in Miu Miu’s campaign.

14-year-old actress Chloe Moretz is another young actress who has recently been featured in fashion magazines, such as Elle.

In 2008, Annie Leibovitz photographed 15-year-old Miley Cyrus who was covering herself with only a sheet.

Kate Moss’s 13-year-old sister, Lottie, has started to model.

Last year, when Kendall Jenner (Kim Kardashian’s sister) was 14, she started her modeling career.

This past September, her 14-year-old sister, Kylie Jenner, walked in Avril Lavigne’s Abbey Dawn fashion show.

The CFDA has launched a Model Health Initiative, which prevents girls under 16 from appearing on catwalks and requires young models to be chaperoned. The guidelines of the new program include educating models about healthy eating habits and encouraging models with eating disorders to seek professional help.

There are many 15 year old models in ads and walking in fashion shows (they still get away with it despite the new rules). However, one of the most controversial young models is 10-year-old Thylane Lena Rose Blondeau, who has already appeared in Vogue Paris. She walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier at the age of 4. Are the following photos edgy and fashion forward or inappropriate and creepy?

Upscale Russian Karaoke in Midtown

Jelsamino, a Russian style karaoke lounge, is opening next month at the Dream Hotel (not to be confused with Dream Downtown). It is located at 210 W. 55th St. (Broadway/7th). The Ginza Group that has opened the Mari Vanna brand of Russian restaurants is behind this project. Instead of Korean karaoke places with private rooms and televisions, this bar will provide live music and professional backup singers for anyone who wants to sing karaoke in the lounge. They stress that it will be very upscale; there will also be a VIP area and a 150-seat restaurant that will serve Mediterranean food. The opening date for the bar is set for January, while the restaurant will open in March.
